6th Grade Band

At the beginning of trimester two, 6th grade band starts. Students who have enrolled for 6th grade beginning band, will be contacted in September. All information on instrument rental, schedules and options will be discussed with both student and parent. 6th grade is the only time to start band in Ludington. If you are someone who is on the fence as to if you want to start band or not, it is encouraged to give it a try. 6th grade band meets during the school day. NO STUDENT WILL BE DENIED THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE BAND DUE TO FINANCIAL CONSTRAINT!! Please talk to your band directors if there is a financial concern pertaining to instrument rental. If the family qualifies for aid, we will assign a school owned instrument to the student free of charge!
The Ludington Area Schools 6th Grade Band is comprised of students interested in furthering their exploration of music through learning a band instrument. All Ludington 6th grade students during the first two months of school will meet with their directors to answer any questions pertaining to the Ludington Band Department.
All 6th grade students are individually tested on recognizing rhythm and melody during two month period starting around the third week of school along with an instrument fitting. The fitting is a chance for students to play one of the instruments that Ludington starts. (flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, saxophone, horn and percussion). The students are observed and are recommended for an instrument that both suits their physical features and their aural strengths. After the fitting is complete and a recommendation has been made, the students and parents attend a rental night hosted by Instrumental Music and Sound located on James Street in Ludington. It is on that night where parents will be able to purchase a rental instrument. Auditions are held in late January for other instruments such as baritone and tuba. Selection for these instruments are based on attendance, work ethic and their ability to play their current instrument.
The band hour starts at 8:55am and ends at 9:55am which is the Middle School's third hour. Students will be involved in two concerts throughout the year, one in February and one in May. Throughout the year these new musicians work diligently to hone their skills to enable them to perform and move on to their 7th grade band experience. Parent involvement is the key to the student’s success. Practice and commitment will enable our band students to realize their full potential.
