The MSU Jazz Spectacular is held on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing Michigan at the MSU School of Music. The Ludington Jazz students look forward to this competition every year. MSU jazz faculty brings in some of the world’s best jazz musicians for this event to work with students and directors. The weekend is highlighted with the Duke Ellington Midwest High School Jazz Competition. The students have to play three tunes for a panel of judges. One of these pieces has to be a Duke Ellington composition. This is an overnight trip that has a fee associated with it. Students are also asked to bring money for meals and any other travel incidentals.

Following your scheduled performance, you will receive a twenty-minute clinic with one of our clinicians. Adjudicators for the high school big band performances will include Essentially Ellington clinicians from Jazz at Lincoln Center and other leading jazz educators.
AWARDS

The judges will select an overall Outstanding Jazz Band based on the performances during the festival. The Outstanding Jazz Band will receive a plaque and also will be invited to perform their three selections as a prelude to the evening concert featuring the Michigan State University Jazz Orchestra I and guest artists. The judges will also identify Outstanding Soloists and Outstanding Sections during the festival. At the evening Awards Ceremony these individuals will be recognized and provided with a certificate signed by the clinicians and guest artists. During the evening concert, all individual award recipients will be acknowledged. The Outstanding Band Director will also receive a partial scholarship to the 2011 Band Director Academy in New York City, hosted by Jazz at Lincoln Center.
