Held annually, the MSBOA State Jazz Competition is a chance for jazz students to perform in an MSBOA festival. The band has similar criteria for performance. The students play three tunes for the judges in contrasting styles. After they perform for the performance judges, the students then perform for a clinician. The students are evaluated with a Roman numeral system similar to the concert version of festivals. As State Solo and Ensemble is the event where students are chosen for the Michigan Youth Arts Festival concert band, the MSBOA state jazz festival is used to choose the 19 members that make up the Michigan Youth Arts Jazz Band. Students are evaluated based on their improvisation skills within their performance. The recordings of the nominated players are then brought to a committee where they choose the top 19 to make up the MYAF Jazz Band.
